Frequently Asked Questions

1. I just read the article in the Dec.2001 issue of GunWorld Magazine on the 10MM EXPRESS . "Great Pistol." I want to thank you and Texas Ammunition Co. from all of us 10MM fans who have been wanting a full power 10MM factory load. I do have one question; in the article it seemed to suggest that a conversion was necessary what does this entail? Thanks for your compliment on the Custom Caspian 10MM pistol. Glad to hear we have some folks interested in the 10MM EXPRESS loads. We think the 10MM cartridge has always been an excellent cartridge concept. Over the past few years the 10 MM has lost some interest due to the factory loads falling far short of the cartridge's potential. Regarding the " conversion " quote in the article this was
a mis-communication. What we did recommend was an upgrade to the recoil
spring systems for the 1911 & Glock 20 units. We offer a HD 25 lb.
compound spring, guide rod buffer system for the 1911 systems and a
HD 24 lb. non-captured steel guide rod system for Glock 20 systems.
This was the info we forwarded to GunWorld and this was somehow interpreted
as a conversion. Either we did not communicate correctly or it was simply
misunderstood. All of our initial field evaluations developing the 10MM loads were conducted using a "stock" Colt Delta Elite and a "stock" Glock" 20 with stock recoil spring systems. Our final field test were conducted , with the above pistols and the HD spring systems installed on both. Comparing the two evaluations led us to recommend the HD systems for these pistols. While not in context with your question we have also received calls
regarding the accuracy achieved in the article with the 10MM EXPRESS
ammo. We achieved significantly smaller groups in our test with
this pistol, but we can all have a bad day at the range, and we simply
attributed the groups in the article as such. 2. I am interested in the "45 Super"® concept for my Govt. Mod 1911 pistol, a friend of mine said he ordered some 32# single recoil springs from W.C. Wolff Co. and this was what he was going use. Will these 32# recoil springs work ok? We were unaware of a 32# single recoil spring for the govt. model 1911 being available from W.C. Wolff Co. However, the folks at W.C. Wolff Co. are very reputable and make excellent gunsprings (of all kinds, including O.E.M..) for the Firearms industry, so a phone call was placed to them and the following information was provided : There is not now nor has there been, a 32# recoil spring available or for sale, for the Govt. model 1911 pistol from W.C. Wolff Co. There was however a few prototype 32# recoil springs (10 or 15) made up for testing purposes! The test results were negative! They stated that there were: ejection, extraction and subsequent feeding malfunctions along with extreme difficulty in slide retraction! And the R&D was dropped. This information can be confirmed by contacting W.C. Wolff Co. directly. There have been recent suggestions by others, that all that is necessary to shoot "45 Super"® ammunition in any pistol chambered in .45 acp is a "simple spring" change! In fact no spring change is necessary to simply shoot "45 Super"® ammunition in a pistol chambered for 45 acp, ( it will not blow up!) but if you want your pistol to safely fire and function reliably and not batter the slide and frame, We recommend you seriously consider the Time proven systems we have developed at Ace custom 45s Inc.. Remember the weapons you experiment on, are "YOURS"! Not those of the "Single Spring Theorist "! There is no" accountability" in a suggestion made on the Internet! 3. You recently performed a "45 Super"® conversion on my Govt. Model 1911 for me and now I am considering one of the .45 acp bottleneck drop-in aftermarket barrels in .38 Casull, .400 CorBon .40 Super etc; which of these do you recommend! We believe the .38 Casull is available (as we have read) only as a complete pistol , we know of no after market barrel available currently, however for a price you can get anything made! Of the two .40 caliber 45. acp bottleneck cartridges you mentioned we recommend Peter Pi's .400 Corbon. We have had a number of our customers tell us that they had simply dropped in a .400 Corbon barrel in their Govt. Model pistol which we had converted to".45 Super"® for them and it worked beautifully with our system! Also ammunition is readily available for the .400 Corbon, and for those who are into reloading, dies are readily available (and inexpensive) and pressures generated by this round are reasonable! One caveat emptor it is well known that the bottleneck .45 acp cartridges have displayed poor feeding characteristics particularly in double stack high capacity (13rd etc.) magazines. 4. I saw on another web-site , an announcement about a cartridge
called the 450 short magnum cartridge made by Triton Co. with std. 45acp
exterior case dimensions. It sounds like an imitation of the "45 Super''®
cartridge except it has a small primer. Do you have any info on this
cartridge? It has been said and indeed is so; "Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery" We recommend the Original "45 Super''® concept. Not an Imitation! 5. I saw on another web-site that all that is required to shoot
"45 Super"® ammunition in my Govt. mod. 1911 is to install an $8.00,
28 lb. recoil spring from W.C. Wolff Co. Is this correct? It is doubtful that the individual who made this statement: 1 - has ever had an F.F.L. license, 2 - has ever owned a business in the Firearms industry, 3 - has ever fired a firearm properly converted to shoot "45 Super®" ammunition, 4 - has never personally seen a box of factory loaded "45 Super®" ammunition, 5 - and certainly has not ever been a "Gunsmith" and probably does not even know one! And most assuredly has never had any direct contact with Ace Custom 45s Inc. An individual such as this is rather, someone who views himself as an expert but claims not to be, (but who certainly wants you to believe he is!) and who likes to try and elevate his status based on his opinions of someone else's work or ideas (they don't have the ability to develop anything on their own!) and then hide behind a shield of objectivity such as; I am no expert and of course I would not recommend this to someone else, these are just my fact findings (of course they have no direct experience with what they claim to be knowledgeable or factual about). The world is full of these types, and the Internet is a safe haven for them! Beware! Since 1988, we have at Ace Custom 45s Inc., fired down range an estimated 80,000 + rounds of "45 Super"® ammunition , in hand loaded and commercially loaded form, in various model 1911 pistols, S&W pistols, Glock-21 pistols, and many others, and continue to shoot several hundred rounds a week of "45 Super"® in our field test on customer supplied weapons and custom units we build! We know what is required to safely shoot and set up a pistol to reliably function with "45 Super"® ammunition! We do not experiment on customer weapons! We offer a system that is time proven! However for the those who wish to subscribe to the $8.00 proclamation, Good luck ! 6. What is the difference between the "45 Super"® cartridge & the
new .460 Roland cartridge? - What does the .460 designate? The .460 Roland cartridge while touted as new, is basically a resurrection of the original .451 Detonics Magnum . The .460 Roland has a case based on the .45acp, with a case length of approximately .957 with a stronger web area. The original .451 Detonics was also based on a.45acp with a case length of approximately.947 with a beefed up web area! While there are other minor differences, extractor grove angle (the Detonics had a short angle, the. 460 Roland has a normal .45acp extractor groove angle) essentially the cartridges are the same except for the .010 difference in case length! The longer case lengths of the .451 Detonics & .460 Roland cases of course allow for a larger powder charge and consequently higher velocities , with of course higher pressures. The current pressures on our "45 Super"® ammunition range from approximately 26,000 to 29,000. The published pressure figures on the .460 Roland indicate approximately 38,000 to 39,000, or about 10,000 above our top "45 Super"® loads. This is why it is "absolutely necessary" to utilize a gas expansion compensator system with the .460 Roland concept! It has never been difficult to achieve higher pressures / velocities it is the resultant mechanical / dynamic consequences that are difficult! The ".45 Super"® concept allows the original ergonomics of the pistols we convert to remain intact for carry purposes as well as the versatility of recreationally shooting std. .45 acp ammunition and simply loading ".45 Super"® ammunition in the magazine when one wants! It was never our intention to wring the last ft.lbs or fps. from the "45 Super"® concept but rather to provide a significant increase in power in the .45 acp platform,. with reliability and function to match. Regarding the .460 designation, I don't know? The cartridge utilizes std. ..451 diameter .45acp bullets. Would suggest you contact the folks who offer the system for clarification. One final note, I understand it has been suggested that std. Factory .45 acp ammunition can be fired in the .460 Roland , this would result in .050+ excess head space, and there is certainly no logic in this ! One would not even consider this with a std,. .45 acp barrel with this much excess headspace! In fact the barrel would be discarded! So why would it be considered otherwise? The choice of course is the consumers'. Ace Custom 45s Inc. wants to make it unequivocally clear "do not" under any circumstances consider firing any "45 Super"® ammunition in "any" barrel that exceeds std.. 45acp chamber dimensions, period! 7. I see that you have posted a notice on your web-site that
Ace Custom 45 Inc. has terminated the Trademark license Agreement with
Triton Cartridge, to load "45 Super"® ammunition. What happened? 8. Reloading information is available from the following
sources: 9. Do I have to change springs (recoil) on a "45Super"®
pistol to shoot standard factory ammunition? 10. Can "45Super"® conversions be done on officer model or variants thereof? We do not offer conversions on these units. 11. What is the smallest Colt 1911 pistol applicable for "45Super"® conversions? The Colt Commander or any equivalent thereof can be converted to "45Super"®. But these units must be limited to our "45Super"® tactical loads. 12. Can I shoot "45Super"® ammunition in my Smith & Wesson Model - 625? Any of the "45Super"® tactical ammunition can be shot in the S&W M - 625. Regarding our full power "45Super"® ammunition, we have received conflicting answers from Smith & Wesson and suggest you contact Smith & Wesson Directly! 13. Can I shoot "45Super"®
ammunition in my Ruger - P90? 14. Can I shoot "45Super"®
ammunition in my Glock-21? 15. Can I shoot "45Super"® ammunition
in my H&K USP? 16. Can I shoot "45Super"® ammunition
in my EAA Witness Pistol 45 ACP or have it converted to do so? 17. Do you still have any .451 Detonics magnum brass? 18. I have a .451 Detonics magnum pistol. Can I shoot "45Super"®
ammunition in a .451 Detonics barrel?
